A friend who's started to write asked me for secret insider knowledge for newbies. Like most first drafts, I made a hash of it, so here is an edited version.

The main point is: there is no right way to write, we all find our own by trial and error. Advice...

How lucky I am to see rainbows every day - posted in windows and painted on gates, chalked on pavements. They make me smile. I carry their hope and gratitude with me. This is my painting of a rainbow.

Being a writer, I spend lots of time alone and indoors, assailed by doubts, foreseeing an array of personal humiliations and disappointing futures.

As a result, happiness has become kind of a hobby. You’re probably as distracted as I am right now, so I’ll keep this brie...

If we believed social media, we might assume that book reviewing is every bookworm's duty, that we owe authors a debt of quotable tribute, that we're responsible for guiding bewildered book-buyers, that posting book reviews is basic good manners and proof we're not ali...

Reading drafts out loud is one of my favourite parts of the writing process

Doing so wakes up different bits of my brain, gets senses and body involved too. It releases the story or chapter from internal processes to external reality.

The words and sente...

Normally, each year, I project manage myself. The results have been mixed. As 2020 starts, I'm queasy about setting priorities and success factors, milestones and deadlines and specifying outcomes. Bleurgh.

Simplicity, reflection, inspiration, that's what...

'Tis the season to be jolly, a delicious word for my favourite state.

In honour of jollity (joviality, jocundity, or jocosity if you prefer)

Reading, writing and smiling

I live in Sussex by the sea, writing stories and novels which are speculative and gently literary. I blog and tweet about inspiration, happy writing and delicious words. My goal is to share a little everyday magic.

You can find my work in the NonBinary Review, Write Like You're AliveTrue Tales from the Old Hill , Hysteria 6, Everyday Epics, Stories for Homes, and Every Day Fiction.

There are also some tiny fictions on this site which I hope you enjoy.

Book Reviews

My book reviews are over on Goodreads. I'm always delighted to receive requests from authors. If your book appeals to me I'll buy it, read it and review it. I'd love to hear from you.
