A journal is a notebook with a fancy name, though not as fancy as chronicle.

Many writers keep journals filled with scribbles which are more important than they look - observations and memories and experiences and dreams, ideas for plots and characters and settings, jui...

Photographs of rebels, daydreamers, eccentric places and the stories they've inspired.

The revolution will begin with smiles. Whoever you are, wherever you are, when you least expect but seem to need it, we will loo...

Lewes Bonfire Boys and Girls

Image and words from the photography exhibition Black/White:Read, August 2019

Don’t you be frought of knuckers or any beast. True enough, Sussex is riddled. Water monsters in their bottomless knuckerholes, stinking gurt serpents in the woods,...

31 Sussex words to love

Walking a whapple-way

Finding a delicious new word makes my day. I like forgotten or obscure words best, those that make me wonder or giggle. The other day I stumbled into Reverend Parish’s Dictionary of Sussex Dialect from 1875. Hooray!

I kne...

Using photographs to spark creativity

Why I found it so hard and how to make it work.

It’ll be easy, I thought:

  • Complete writing rituals, as normal.

  • Look at the photographs.

  • Gonzo (my creative brain) will hop up and down (the way she does) yelling a kerzilli...

About

Reading, writing and smiling

I live in Sussex by the sea, writing stories and novels which are speculative and gently literary. I blog and tweet about inspiration, happy writing and delicious words. My goal is to share a little everyday magic.

You can find my work in the NonBinary Review, Write Like You're AliveTrue Tales from the Old Hill , Hysteria 6, Everyday Epics, Stories for Homes, and Every Day Fiction.

There are also some tiny fictions on this site which I hope you enjoy.
